Natural Ways to lighten Hair
Lightening your hair color at home is always tricky. Most often lightening attempts can turn into hair color disasters and can quite costly to fix. Use natural ingredients wisely. As most can be drying to your hair. And please don't attempt to go more than a half shade to a full shade lighter than your natural color. This is when orange hair comes into play!

The below natural ingredients have been known to lighten hair. You will not get a bleached effect, more so a subtle highlight change. Several applications may have to be done to notice results in your hair color.
Henna, the colorless kind can create an herbal hair bleach by mixing with orange, lemon and cucumber juice and apply to hair.
Honey contains natural Hydrogen peroxide. Iron in honey oxidizes the oxygen free radicals released by the hydrogen peroxide.
Method for lightening hair color with Honey:
- Mix 3/4 cup honey with 1/12 cups regular hair conditioner
- Apply to damped hair. Wrap hair in saran wrap or a plastic shower cap.
- Let sit for up to 8 hours, then rinse.
Chamomile is a great way to brighten dull blonde hair color. Using a chamomile rinse several times over a week or so will brighten those locks in no time! Also check out our Chamomile shampoo recipe here
Method for lightening hair color with Chamomile:
- Strain the tea, and allow to cool
- Shampoo and condition hair as normal.
- Tip head over bathtub or sink. Use a bowl underneath to catch the liquid. Pour the tea through towel-dried hair a few times.
- Leave on hair for 30 minutes, then rinse with clean water.
Lemon. Who hasn't tried lemons to lighten their hair! This method works great to lighten hair color. You can use the juice from fresh lemons or an easier way is to buy the lemon juice concentrate from the store.
Methods for lightening hair color with Lemon Juice:
- With lemons, you need heat. Best to sit in the sun or wrap hair with saran wrap then apply heat with a blowdryer. But the sun does work the best
- Dilute the lemon juice with 3 parts juice, 1 part water.M ix in a spray bottle and apply to hair before sunning.
- You can also add 1 tbs of Olive oil to the mixture to combat the drying effects of the lemon juice on the hair
- Always condition after using lemon juice to lighten the hair! Lemon juice is very drying on the hair.
How to Lighten Hair naturally with Rhubarb
You'll need 3/4 oz. powdered rhubarb root and 4 cups water.
Directions: Simmer rhubarb root in 4 cups of water in a pot for 1 hour. Let the mixture cool, and then strain it through a sieve.
To Use: Use the strained liquid as a final rinse after washing and conditioning your hair. Pour the rinse through your hair over and over again. Catch the liquid in a bowl. Results will be a slight, warm or bright highlights in your blond or light-brown hair.
