Non-Toxic Facial Cleansers By: Denise Palmer
My entire childhood I was told by my mom, grandma and aunts…..soap and water is all you need to clean your face and keep it healthy.

Well….if only my mom, grandma and aunts knew what I know today about what's IN the water and soap they so adamantly recommended for all those years! And better yet, what if they had known about alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)?
Moms Organic House is your place for practical, everyday organic living information, tips and ideas. Whether it's the garden, kitchen, bathroom or cleaning closet, "themom" is living an organic lifestyle and sharing information and experiences along the way. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA's) - Natures Facial Cleanser

AHA's actually improve the skin instead of just temporarily making it look better. Originating from the sugars in certain plants, alpha hydroxy acids are naturally occurring. Some examples are: * Sugar Cane * Milk * Grapes * Citrus Fruits * Apples * Lemon Juice * Vinegar * Blackberries * Tomatoes

The acids exfoliate the skin by dissolving the "glue" that holds dead skin cells together. This removes dirt, oil and blackheads, while allowing the natural emollient oils to surface. This process promotes the growth of new cells, which results in healthier skin that is more flexible and even in tone, less wrinkled, more hydrated, and smoother.
So now we know what we NEED to clean our skin, alpha hydroxy acid, let's take a look at HOW to use all natural, non-toxic facial cleanser ingredients, straight from your own kitchen to create healthier happier skin. Juice Cleansing

Lemon and citrus fruit juice is a great source of alpha hydroxy acid and is super simple to use.Squeeze the lemon and/or fruit juice into a small container and refrigerate. Once a day, rub a small amount of the juice on your face, avoiding your eyes. Let dry for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with warm, then cool water.

Minced Fruits

Grapes, blackberries and strawberries all contain AHA's. Run one, or a combination of fruits, through a mincer and apply to face. It's best to lay down while using this recipe and relax while the fruits do their job. After 10-15 minutes, rinse with warm, then cool water.

Unlikely Combo

Milk and tomatoes. Juice 1 medium ripe tomatoe and combine with an equal amount of milk. Will keep fresh in the refrigerator up to 1 day. Using cotton balls, wipe on face, daily, let dry, then rinse with warm then cool water.
Vinegar

Vinegar (high-quality white or apple cider) has a tonic action that promotes blood circulation in the small capillaries that irrigate the skin. It is also antiseptic, preventing the proliferation of bacteria, viruses, or yeast that trigger infection. It can dissolve excessive fatty deposits at the surface of the skin and reduce scaly or peeling conditions. It is a great, inexpensive, all natural, non-toxic facial cleanser that you can use daily.

One caution regarding the use of alpha hydroxy acids: Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun so be certain to always apply a sunscreen when going outdoors.

So the next time your "well intentioned" mom or grandma shares their "beauty secrets" with you, you might just want to turn-them-on to some of yours!
The acidity of an AHA peel is important. Often dermatologists will offer deep cleaning peels that are between 20-70% acidity, which can cause burning. The all natural, non-toxic examples listed above, of an organic variety, offer an acidity level of between 5-10%. This is a much safer acid level that will still yield significant results, with little to no risk of discomfort or damage.

It is always highly recommended that you test any all natural, non-toxic facial cleanser recipe on yourself, prior to using. You can place a small amount behind your ear, or on your forearm to ensure you do not have an adverse reaction to any of the ingredients.
